IMAGINE THAT

Is everything getting more expensive?

It feels like everything costs more these days, and for the most part, that is definitely true. But there’s also a few categories of things (mostly electronics) that haven’t kept up with inflation and, in fact, have become more affordable. And on the other side, there’s a few things (like hospital services and housing) that have outpaced inflation. Interesting to see some of these categories laid out.

CAREER SMARTS

The 3 C’s: A Simple Guide to Success in the “Real World”

By Frank McKiernan, Co-Founder of Third View

I recently had the opportunity to visit my alma mater Bryant University. It was my first time being back on campus since I graduated.

It was great seeing how much has changed, and I also got to reconnect with some of my professors who haven’t changed much!

During my visit, I spoke to a finance class about my journey after Bryant.

With graduation next month, I thought it was timely to give them a few takeaways on how to be intentional as a professional when they enter the “real world”.

I explained how these 3 “Cs” have helped me grow personally and professionally throughout my career:

Communication

How you speak, how you write, and how you deliver your message to your audience will be one of the strongest factors that contribute to your success in your personal life and career. If you aren’t able to effectively communicate, you will yield to others that can. There are troves of research supporting the link between effective communication skills and being successful in life and business. The earlier you start honing these skills, the stronger a professional you’ll be later on.

Consistency

As an owner and operator of a business, there is no trait more valuable in an employee than one who is reliable and consistent. To know that they will be at their desk at the same time everyday and will complete their work on time with the same quality and integrity is invaluable. Be that person. Remember that how you do anything is how you do everything. Consistency compounds and if you let it, it will improve your health and wellness, personal relationships, and family life.

Continuous learning

We’re very fortunate to be living during a time when we have the world at our fingertips. Incredibly complex topics can be summarized and learned in minutes. Find something that interests you and research it. When you’re finished, do it again. YouTube videos, Podcasts, Ted Talks, it’s all there for you - for free. It may seem like you're at the finish line, but graduation is just the beginning. Take full advantage. The possibilities are endless.

ASK THE ADVISORS

“How do I set up direct deposit and the right tax withholdings for my new job?”

Direct deposit is the easy part. HR will hand you a form (or a link in your payroll portal). Grab your bank's routing and account numbers from your banking app, plug them in, and you're done.

Withholdings happen on the W-4. If you're single, one job, no dependents, just fill in your info, check "Single," sign, and you're set.

If you have a side hustle, a working spouse, or want to fine-tune how much you owe (or get back) at tax time, skip the guessing and plug your numbers into the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator at irs.gov/W4App. It tells you exactly what to enter on each line.

A great story about grit, discipline, and what happens when someone fully commits. Ken started from nothing, battled through plenty of ups and downs, and in three years went from a “running nobody” to the world’s fastest marathoner over 50.

His simple mantra: win or die trying.

🎧 Jay Shetty Podcast - Tim Feriss

“If you're starting in Kansas intending to be in California, but your car is pointed toward New York…you could be Mario Andretti, it doesn't matter. You're going the wrong direction.” Lots of relevance to your professional and wealth journey.

🎧 Huberman Lab - Marc Andreesen

Fitting episode for today’s theme. Lots of great lessons here on risk-taking and building success in your personal and professional life.
